Accessing External Links

These instructions are written for Netscape 3.0 . The procedure outlined below is analogous for any browser supporting 32 character file names.

Throughout the Pathfinder CD-ROM site there are numerous links to external sites. Some of these links are labeled as external, but many are not. If you have an Internet connection and a page takes a long time to load, look at the connection box at the bottom of the browser.

In this case we have clicked on the link for the Web Interface for Telescience under Related Web Sites in the left hand side panel. We see in the bottom connecting box it reads: "Connect: Contacting Host: mars.graham.com..." which means that the browser is attempting to contact the site located at http://mars.graham.com/wits/index.html .

This is an external site separate from the Pathfinder CD-ROM. If the page takes too long to load, hit the red stop button located in the menu bar. If you do not have a network connection, then you must hit the stop button since the page will never load.

The above screen shows the page fully loaded with the stop button now gray. Notice that the location address reads "http://mars.graham.com/wits/index.html" rather than "file:///C|/MPF/index1.html". You are no longer accessing files from the CD-ROM file system. Hit the back button if you wish continue browsing the CD-ROM file system.
