This animation is a simulation of the reconfiguration of the Mars Global Surveyor spacecraft in preparation for mapping operations. The solar panels are oriented to track the Sun, while the high-gain antenna is deployed to tack the Earth, thus allowing the spacecraft to remain pointed at Mars while it orbits. The animation was generated by the JPL Dview software, developed by Dr. Patti M. Koenig of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, running on a Silicon Graphics workstation.
