This animation is a simulation of the Mars Global Surveyor spacecraft as it orbits Mars in the mapping configuration. The simulation demonstrates how the solar panels track the Sun while the high-gain antenna tacks the Earth, thus allowing the spacecraft to remain pointed at Mars while it orbits. The animation was generated by the JPL Dview software, developed by Dr. Patti M. Koenig of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, running on a Silicon Graphics workstation.
