Spacecraft Configurations

During its five-year mission, the spacecraft needed to operate in four distinct mission phases. Due to its innovative design, large changes to the physical configuration of the spacecraft were not required, but some modifications were necessary.

Launch Configuration: how the spacecraft looked when leaving Earth
Cruise Configuration: how the spacecraft looked on its journey to Mars
Mars Orbit Insertion and
Aerobraking Configuration:
how the spacecraft looked when it went into orbit around Mars
Science Operations Configuration: how the spacecraft looks while conducting scientific investigations
