Richard Cook has twice held the position of project manager of NASA's Mars Science Laboratory project at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, Calif. MSL landed the car-sized rover Curiosity on Mars in August 2012 and it has been exploring Gale Crater ever since.

Cook joined JPL in 1989, working first on the Magellan mission to Venus. He was the Mars Pathfinder mission manager responsible for operating the first rover – Sojourner – on the surface of Mars in 1997.
