This artist's rendering depicts NASA's Mars 2020 rover, with its robotic arm extended.

The rover's basic structure capitalizes on the design and engineering work done for the NASA rover Curiosity, which landed on Mars in 2012, but includes new science instruments and other engineering upgrades.

The Mars 2020 mission is part of NASA's Mars Exploration Program. NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, a division of the California Institute of Technology, Pasadena, manages NASA's Mars Exploration Program for the NASA Science Mission Directorate, Washington.
