PASADENA, Calif. - Engineers at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory put Curiosity, the Mars Science Laboratory rover, through an obstacle course to test its mobility system. The rover has the same classic six-wheel suspension system used by Spirit and Opportunity, but unlike its predecessors, the mobility system will also serve as its landing gear.

The Mars Science Laboratory will launch from Florida in late 2011 and land on Mars in August 2012. Curiosity will study whether the landing region has ever had environmental conditions favorable for life and for preserving evidence of life if it once existed.

JPL, a division of Caltech, manages the Mars Science Laboratory project for NASA's Science Mission Directorate, Washington. More information about the mission is online at: http://mars.jpl.nasa.gov/msl.
