A Virginia school district wins an Emmy for "Flight School: On the Red Planet," an educational video for middle-school students to learn more about Mars exploration, the launch of the Mars Science Laboratory mission, and science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). The film won in the Instructional-Informational Program category of the 55th annual competition held by the National Capital Chesapeake Bay (NCCB) Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (NATAS).
The broadcast team at Fairfax County Public Schools produced the video in partnership with the National Air and Space Museum (NASM). The Gertrude E. Skelly Educational Foundation funded the program. NASA contributed significantly to the show with NASA managers, engineers, and scientists appearing on camera as career role models, in addition to giving producers access to NASA launch and archive facilities.
