17) Explorers on Mars: The MARIE instrument on the Odyssey orbiter will provide radiation data that is vital to the eventual human exploration of Mars. Radiation from cosmic rays can trigger cancer and cause damage to the central nervous system. The experiment will analyze potential radiation doses that would be experienced by future astronauts and determine the resulting health risks to them.
